Artist on Tumblr

Artist Jeremy Miranda lives and works in Salem, Massachusetts where he works with acrylic paint to create images influenced by nature, technology, and memory. Among my favorite of his works are his split level landscapes connected by ladders that depict hidden worlds just under the surface of the ocean.

Arhitectural Hand Drawings by  Rafael Araujo

When it comes to architectural drawings, computer-aided design software is being used  and due to this, hand-drawn art seems to begin to lose.  The venezuelan artist Rafael Araujo show us that no matter how impressive the technology, nothing can match the expressiveness of hand-drawings.

His series of architectural style drawings entitled ‘Calculation’ are done with pencil and pen and seem to try to give an answer to the question “Is the Universe actually made of math?”. Araujo creates complex fields of three dimensional space where he renders the motion and mathematical brilliance of nature with a pencil, ruler and protractor. The trajectories of a butterfly fly or the logarithmic spirals of shells are beautifully illustrated by Araujo, who`s remarkable skills seem to resurrect the art of hand-drawing.

Araujo`s illustrations appear to be drawn from Da Vinci’s sketchbooks,  showing us that our reality isn`t just described by mathematics, it is mathematics.

Sculpture by Beth Stichter  ‘The Four Humors’

Sanguine :  Too much blood - Passionate, Bold, impulsive
Melancholic :Too much black bile - Depressed, anxious, moody Choleric : Too much yellow bile - Irritable, hostile, bitter
Phlegmatic : Too much phlegm - Passive, introverted, rational

The Four Humors is a body of work spanning 2009-2010 which examines the history of scientifically categorizing human behavior, specifically the particular theory of understanding  human psychology invented by the Ancient Greeks.
“Essentially, this theory held that the human body was filled with four basic substances, called four humors, which are in balance when a person is healthy. All diseases and disabilities resulted from an excess or deficit of one of these four humors. The four humors were identified as black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood.
When a patient was suffering from a surplus or imbalance of one fluid, then his or her personality and physical health would be affected.”

The Rose de Jéricho (Anastatica hierochuntica) is a species of desert moss that has the amazing ability to ‘resurrect’ itself after bouts of extreme dehydration lasting months or even years. After just a few hours of exposure to moisture the plants burst to life, uncurling from a tight ball of dry leaves to a green flower-like shape. Videographer Sean Steininger shot this timelapse of several plants as he exposed them to water.

Watch  the video:

A time lapse of a Rose of Jericho . After being exposed to water, the plant turns from a dried tumbleweed to a green fern over the course of several hour.
